What a good Killeen fence company can answer on the first call
Most fence trouble in Killeen starts with a question nobody asked up front. Before you pick a fence company, ask how they will handle these five things, and expect a plain answer to each.
- Who pulls the permit? The City of Killeen says a building permit is required to erect a new fence or to move, repair or replace an existing one, and its projects-that-require-a-permit sheet lists fences over 24 inches tall, replacement of more than 25 feet, and any change of material.
- Who calls Texas811? Post holes are excavation, so the Texas811 notice has to go in at least two working days ahead. The locate is free.
- How deep and how braced? Much of the area has clay that moves, so footing depth and gate-post bracing matter more than board count.
- What is in writing? Footage, height, material, gates, haul-off of the old fence, and the start window.
- Does the HOA need to approve it? Covenants can be stricter than the city, so get approval in writing before anyone digs.
Fence rules change from one Killeen-area city to the next
A fence company that works all four cities has to know four sets of rules. This snapshot is where each city's published rules start. The service area page adds the office details for each.
| City | What the published rules say | Where to read them |
|---|---|---|
| Killeen | Privacy fences 4 ft in the front yard, 8 ft side and rear. Chain-link 4 ft front, 6 ft side and rear. | City fence checklist |
| Harker Heights | Code summaries report an 8 ft overall cap and 4 ft inside the front setback. | Fences and screening code |
| Copperas Cove | 6 ft maximum; 36 in. in front and exterior side yards with 50 percent transparency. | City fence guide |
| Nolanville | City page is unclear on permits; ask the permit coordinator before building. | Permits page |

How a quote request works
You send one short form. We hand it to a local independent fence pro who contacts you to talk through the job. There is nothing to sign with us, because we are a referral service rather than a contractor. Whatever you agree to is between you and the pro, and the pro answers for their own licensing, permits and insurance. Compare at least two written scopes if you can, and use the cost guide to sanity-check numbers.
Neighborhoods and lots we hear about
Killeen covers a lot of ground. Builders have been active around Chaparral and Stagecoach and along Stan Schlueter Loop, according to Tex Appeal magazine, and growth is pushing south toward SH 195. Older west-side areas such as Lakeview Park near the Leon River and outer-edge neighborhoods with bigger lots tend to ask different questions: long runs, dog fencing, and drive gates. Tell the form which one you are in, and mention it if the property sits near Fort Hood, which the Army renamed back from Fort Cavazos in 2025.
How the rules play out in a real yard
Three situations come up again and again in Killeen, and each lands on a different line in the city's paperwork.
- A corner lot. The city's checklist flags a 35-foot visibility triangle at corners, and Section 28-241 defines it from the curb lines and bars view obstructions over 2 feet tall inside it. A solid six-foot fence has to stay clear of that area, so a corner-lot quote should show where the fence turns.
- Swapping an old chain-link front fence for something nicer. Front-yard fences top out at 4 feet in Killeen, and a change of material is itself a permit trigger on the city's list.
- Replacing a 30-foot run after a storm. That is more than the 25 feet the city lists, so it is permit territory even though it feels like a repair.
None of these are hard, but each is easier when the pro raises it before the first post goes in.
